Background of the study
Educational media, including television programs, online content, and radio broadcasts, play a crucial role in shaping language awareness among speakers. In Nigerian Pidgin, which is widely used across informal settings, educational media have the potential to influence phonological awareness by exposing speakers to standardized pronunciation and varied linguistic models (Okeke, 2023). This study examines the effect of such media on the phonological awareness of Nigerian Pidgin speakers by comparing the phonetic outputs of individuals with differing levels of media exposure. Through acoustic analysis and perceptual tests, the research investigates parameters such as articulation clarity, vowel quality, and prosodic patterns. Findings from prior studies suggest that educational media can improve phonological accuracy, but its impact on a creole language like Nigerian Pidgin remains largely unexplored (Ibrahim, 2024). This study seeks to document how media influences speech patterns and awareness, and to propose recommendations for leveraging media in language education and preservation initiatives.
Statement of the problem
Despite the widespread consumption of educational media, its effect on phonological awareness in Nigerian Pidgin speakers is under-researched. Inadequate exposure to standardized media may contribute to persistent phonetic inaccuracies and hinder language development (Chinwe, 2023). The absence of empirical data on how media influences phonological features limits the formulation of effective educational interventions. This study aims to address these issues by systematically examining the impact of media exposure on phonological awareness among Nigerian Pidgin speakers, providing insights that can enhance language teaching and communication strategies.
